Assumption Day Cookout

One of the lovely ladies at the 4 Real Forum was asking what foods would be fun to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption and while Double Chocolate Cloud Pies would be very festive and herb salads would be very appropriate considering the traditional blessings of the day, we opted to have an End of Summer Cookout. I know that summer won't be over for a few more (read: 12) weeks but the kids were so excited. What could make splashing and playing in the water more fun than hot dogs, watermelon and an ooey-gooey dessert? What could make them opt for eating dinner inside faster than you could swim a lap in a 10' round pool? Being invaded by flies. Lots of them.

I did make fruit salad in honor of the Blessing of Fruits and Herbs that Kristen reminded us of but then forgot it was in the fridge. Uh-huh.

Husband grilled up some fabulous Hawaiian Chicken and Pineapple for the grown ups and for dessert, we made Cloud Sandwiches.

All right... they were smores... so sue me!

The kids got to eat them in the pool and Husband got to toast a marshmallow for the first time in his life. First he tried to smoke it over the mesquite chips in the barbecue pit (the fire had died down a little too much) so it was the gas stove top to the rescue. Not authentic, but that's what you get when you wait 36 years to toast a marshmallow!
