R.I.P. Romulus Linney

I really don't expect anyone here in Mommy Bloggerland to recognize the name Romulus Linney. It's a name that isn't well known in most circles outside of the theater and even in those circles, it's usually coupled with words like "unsung" and "overlooked". Truthfully, most people are more familiar with his daughter, Laura Linney(Please Can I Keep It is a huge hit with my kiddos!)

Mr. Linney was the focus of my junior thesis and his play, Three Poets, was my senior studio when I was in college. He even helped with my thesis by providing me with research regarding his career along with a lovely note of encouragement. All of this is to say that Mr. Linney passed away yesterday and I just wanted to offer a prayer for the repose of his soul and for the comfort of the family he leaves behind.

De Profundis
Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice.
Let Your ears be attentive to my voice in supplication.
If You, O Lord, mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?
But with You is forgiveness, that You may be revered.
I trust in the Lord; my soul trusts in His word.
My soul waits for the Lord more than sentinels wait for the dawn.
More than sentinels wait for the dawn, let Israel wait for the Lord,
For with the Lord is kindness and with Him is plenteous redemption;
And He will redeem Israel from all their iniquities.

P.S. If you are interested, you can read this interview from 2004 in which Mr. Linney interviews his daughter about her career. I thought it was cute, but that might just be me.

  1. Hi,

    Thank you for this post in honor of Romulus Linney. My parents became friends with him after moving to the same part of the Hudson Valley in NY (and sharing a passion for the arts and theatre). We knew that recently he'd been diagnosed with lung cancer and given only a few months to live. It was a shock to hear of his passing since we thought he might have more time.

  2. Yes, may he rest in peace.

    PS. I really enjoy Laura Linney's work but wasn't familiar with her father's...and I certainly didn't know he had passed away. I learn a lot at your website, Charlotte! You are one of the best-connected people I know.

  3. Thanks for sharing. I read the interview...I liked it & thought it was cute. I kept trying to imagine the two (father & daughter) trying to keep serious to do this interview.:) RE: Laura Linney...love/hate relationship with her. I think she is a great actress, but some of her characters creep me out. I loved the acting, but hated her character in Mystic River. Good acting in Exorcism of Emily Rose, but that movie still spooks me. Love, love, loved her acting and character in John Adams with Paul Giamatti. She's definitely a face I like to see at the Oscars. I could sense the pride in her father through the interview!:)
