Donut's for lunch?

subtitled: How history is conspiring against me

Sea captain, baker and inventor John F. Blondel received a patent for a doughnut cutter on this day in 1872. He liked to put holes in the middle of his fried cake pastries so he could fit them over the handles of the helm of his ship. Make or eat doughnuts today.

Now why did the kids circle this date on the Learning Calendar?

A dear friend of mine says:
A super easy way to make donuts is to get the large biscuits (Grands?), cut a hole and fry them. Easy and yummy when topped with powdered sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon sugar or glaze (chocolate or vanilla).

But you probably didn't want to know that, did you?

  1. That's my husband's favorite recipe. Thanks for the historical tidbit. I really need a donut today -- like a hole in the head! Ha!

  2. Oh, Charlotte, you're killing me! I've got no biscuits on hand, but I bet it would work to whip some up from scratch. Maybe? Now I'm REALLY wanting donuts!!!

  3. Oh no! It is so not fair of me to give a pregnant woman cravings! I'll be right there to bring you some but I doubt they will be piping hot.

I don't know if biscuits form scratch would work since I have never tried this recipe myself but Barb has this recipe on her cooking blog. Sorry!

  4. OK, so we need some spokes on the minivan steering wheel for the donuts now.

  5. LOL! Thanks, Charlotte! I actually found a recipe nearly identical to Barb's in one of my cookbooks and it turned out great! I figured if I was going to go to the trouble of "from scratch", I might as well do it right! I halved my recipe because I didn't really think we NEEDED two dozen (although I would have liked them!) and we had them with some strawberries for dessert after lunch! Thanks a bunch for sharing your little "fun fact"...we want a calendar like that! :)

  6. Melissa,
I linked to the one we have in the original post. This is our second year using the Learning Calendar and it really is a lot of fun. Very visually interesting as well. The kids run to read it every morning (even though most of them also read ahead) and tell me what they learned.

  7. That's how we made donuts when I was growing up!! Powdered sugar is good but my favorite was just white sugar.

I remember using a glass, laid horizontally, as a rolling pin to make them flat before making the hole
