Feast of St. Jane De Chantal

Lord, you chose Saint Jane Frances to serve you both in marriage and in religious life. By her prayers help us to be faithful in our vocation and always to be the light of the world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

*Well, now I'm confused again. I have seen 12 different calendars both online and in-print and half of them list her feast day as today and the other half list her on August 12th. Anyone know for sure?

  1. My Guide to the Liturgy of the Hours has her feast listed on Aug 12 with a note that it has been transferred from 8/18.

Wikipedia explains: St Jane Frances de Chantal's feast is currently celebrated in the Roman Catholic Calendar of saints on 12 August. Prior to the reform of the Roman Catholic Calendar of Saints in 1962, her feast had been celebrated on 21 August. In recent memory, her feast was celebrated on 12 December, but was transferred by decree 2492/01/L of 18 December 2001 of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, because her optional memorial on 12 December was becoming superseded in a large part by the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, whom Pope John Paul II's declared Patroness of the Americas on 25 March 1999. In the United States, her optional memorial has been transferred to August 18. Traditional Roman Catholics continue to celebrate her feast day on 21 August"

    Wow that's a bit confusing!

  2. Thank you, Charlotte! We will be celebrating on Friday, August 21. I am looking forward to decorating our dining room with your saint coloring pages again this school year.

  3. Hmmm...My birthday is August 12 and I'm always confused about the feasts. Sometimes, St. Clare is listed as August 11 and sometimes August 12. This can be so confusing.

  4. Fr. Z. has a post about the shifting date here: http://wdtprs.com/blog/2009/06/quaeritur-when-is-the-feast-of-st-jane-frances-de-chantal/
    Confusing but interesting!

  5. You're not the only one ... our favorite priest did the same thing (was vested for another feast and ready to give the sermon when he read the introit and saw it was St. JdC instead!).

No one said being Catholic would be easy, y'know!

  6. Catholics attached to the Extraordinary Form of the Mass observe the pre-1962 calendar. Today is the traditional feast of St. Jane de Chantal...which in no way is superior or lesser in importance to the current date in the Ordinary of August 12th.

A unified calendar would be lovely...here's hoping our Holy Father will take up that challenge!
