The Birmingham Zoo

We drove all day to get there; through Louisiana (which Sunshine thinks is the most beautiful state she has ever been through), across the Mississippi River (which impressed the children tremendously!) and made it to our destination 11 1/2 hours after we began. We had planned to do the trip in two days but with an early start, two drivers and no room at the inn thanks to local college graduations, we pressed on. After we crashed at my in-laws house, we met the Sisters for breakfast the next morning and then headed out with our Sister to the Birmingham Zoo.

We didn't get to see all of the attractions, but I have to say that I was very impressed with what we did see. Lots of opportunities to interact and little stations set up along the way manned by volunteers who offered extra information about the animals or their habitats. Anyone vacationing in Birmingham should consider a trip to this zoo!

As one of my BIL's said," Look! A Sister in her natural habit."
There was a chalk wall in the kangaroo section that let you trace aboriginal drawings. Sister decided to have a little fun with her big brother instead!
I loved this picture of Sister and the kids in their hats peering over the wall at this monster below:

This little guy kept peeking up at us from the bird pond. I couldn't help thinking "Who's here to see who, at the zoo?" Signing Time fans know what I mean!
The butterfly encounter was a big hit... as you can imagine!
BigBoy isn't usually too fond of the potentially louder animals like this Bengal Tiger but he was willing to go just about anywhere his supercool uncles wanted to take him.

A little hero worship never hurt anybody!

And we saw chipmunks everywhere! Even right here mingling with the giraffes. We don't see these guys here in Texas and the children thought they were adorable!
Camels however are not very adorable!

But this is...
More tomorrow!

Another Super Birthday

Scenes from last Friday:Superman came flying in (suspended from the ceiling) to attend BigBoy's celebration.
The birthday boy's chair of honor!

BigBoy is a super kid who loves super heroes. We have let the children see some of the old 1940's cartoons and thanks to online video rental they have also enjoyed some of the 1950's television show which prompted many interesting discussions like what are those things that you type on like computers but without screens. They haven't seen any of the more modern superhero movies but their fascination with superheroes needs little more than their own imagination to grow.

What is it about kids and super heroes? Even before The Professor had been introduced to any of the usual characters he had created alter egos for himself and his brother and a whole world to go with them. My SIL and her husband had their children convinced for a time that they were superheroes who went on nightly adventures while the girls slept safely in their beds.

Bigboy's other love is the zoo, so of course, we had to make a visit in the morning. We didn't stay very long as we soon grew tired of getting drizzled on. We found shelter during the heavier downpours in the Texas Wild Weather show (ironic, don'cha think?) and finally got to see the burrowing owl that had eluded us every other time we went. (I was seriously starting to think this was some kind of cruel joke. Was there a camera installed behind the sign that read "Can you find the burrowing owl?" just to catch the silly people press their noses to the glass and look. Can you see him Fred? Nope. Can't see him Marge. Of course not...he's BURROWING! (insert maniacal laughter here).

One of his gifts was his own little zoo. This safari play set by Animal Planet was perfect. I had looked at the Fisher Price Learning Zoo and determined that the animals were too cartoonish for my tastes (and the price was too much for my pocketbook). Some Scleich figures that were more realistically colored had ferocious features that I knew BigBoy wouldn't like. The Animal Planet set was the perfect compromise. The animals all looked true to life (in some cases too true...just ask my mom about the snake!) but have "happy faces" that won't frighten sensitive little guys like my BigBoy. He is terrified of the gorillas at the zoo but had his gorilla drive the jeep all over the play room with nothing but smiles!

We returned home in time for a nap for the birthday boy, time to whip up his favorite turkey burgers for dinner and of course, a chocolate cake with a Superman shield on it for dessert. A super day for a super kid!

Texas Wild

Yesterday started off great with coffee at the bookstore, kept merrily rolling along with a trip to drop off some food for a new mama (I hope they could take their eyes off their beautiful little one long enough to eat it!) and ended with a perfect trip to the zoo with Husband and a perfectly frightful storm that made me think it was September in Sarasota. (It was my fault really. I made a pasta salad that is notoriously known as Storm Salad in our house since I only seem to make it in the spring and it is usually served with a side of wind sheers, rain and sometimes hail.)

The children really enjoyed showing Husband all of their favorite animals at the zoo. First stop was Meerkat Mound, with a swing by the African Savannah, a stroll past the sharks in the Great Barrier Reef and a quick saunter through the snake house. The majority of our time was spent in their favorite area.We stopped by on our first trip of the year hoping to see some wildflowers. There are so many we haven't had a chance to get up close and personal with! We see them as we drive here and there, but it isn't the same as getting to explore them with our senses. I think we might have to resort to poaching some soon. Don't worry! It isn't illegal. While a DPS officer might issue you a citation for impeding traffic, they would sooner give you a ticket for selling Limburger cheese on Sunday than for picking wildflowers. Anyway, there were no wildflowers to be found, but plenty of other beauties to behold. Bald eagles, bobcats, jaguars, mountain lions, coyotes (in between the jaguar and mountain lions acting very skittish...hmmmm... wonder why?), roadrunners and of course hornets, bats, bees and rattlesnakes.

Poor Husband! I know he loves me and he loves our life, but if we could move somewhere else without my mother hunting him down, he would in a heart beat. He has lived all over the continental U.S. so he speaks with a good amount of certitude when he says: Never have I lived somewhere with so many dangerous creatures everywhere you turn. You step outside and there are things trying to either eat you or kill you!

Sorry sweetie!

We visited Sea World last November, so the Gulf Coast area was of particular interest to my kiddos. You can touch a sea anemone (thank goodness for spell check), a sting ray (or just get splashed by one) and a sleepy slipper lobster.

Of course, we had to go see the Texas Wild Weather Show, again. It is super fun for everyone except BigBoy who doesn't like all of the loud thunder and flickering lights. The rain and golf ball-sized hail (plastic ones) was a little intense the first time the big kids saw it, but now they think it's a hoot! When the show is over there is a very nice (read: air conditioned) area that shows how good land management is our responsibility which fits right along with teaching our kids that we try to be good stewards of the earth.

However, this display was the cause of some amusement for Husband and a little embarrassment for me.
The yellow wrench has the word "contraception" on it. The first time we saw it I was furious! The Fort Worth Zoo isn't like other zoos where they try to make you feel guilty for sucking up all of the air and depriving the animals of homes with your very presence. Why have they changed now? What are they trying to say? How dare they suggest a thing like this in a place mostly enjoyed by children! I called Husband to tell him of my frustration and anger.

In his oh-so-calm, cool voice, with just the slightest hint of a chuckle (never condescension) he says: I think they're talking about... for the animals.

You know..."Neuter is Cuter!", Bob Barker and all that?

Tee, hee, hee! Silly me!
